Mapping in iOS 8

Apple’s homegrown Maps app is a built-in window to the world, providing maps, satellite images, business information, and directions .

When it debuted in 2012, the Maps app quickly earned a reputation for containing incorrect data. Although it has had time to improve, Maps still isn’t the right solution for everyone (for an alternative, see Google Maps, later). However, if Maps works well for you, you’ll gain some system integration advantages, such as being able to ask Siri for directions.

Moving around the Map

② You can use two fingers to rotate the map. Tap the compass in the upper right to reset the map.

Map Views

You can choose a view by tapping the info icon in the lower right. View include:

③ The Standard view shows just the facts.

③ The Standard view shows just the facts.

You see any of the above views in 2D or 3D by tapping the info icon and tapping the appropriate option. 3D view shows a 3D rendering of certain cityscapes, such as London and Tokyo, but in less-traveled locations it just shows a birds’-eye view.

New! Flyover City Tours

iOS 8 introduces Flyover City Tours, which are short guided tours of major cities. To see one in action, type a city name in the Search field, such as New York City, and then tap Start on the keyboard. A 3D Flyover Tour banner appears at the top. Tap Start .

④ A Flyover City Tour can show you around a town you’ve never visited.

If you don’t see the tour banner, tap the arrow on its pin popover and then tap Flyover Tour.

Finding Yourself

Finding a Location

Note: Maps can show only one dropped pin at a time.

⑤ Maps can show business information, like addresses and operating hours.

Reporting a Problem in Maps

Although Apple Maps has improved since its introduction, it still has issues. If you see something that’s incorrect, you can report it:

  1. Tap the info icon in the lower right.
  2. Tap Report a Problem.
  3. Choose the kind of problem from the list.
  4. Answer the remaining questions as prompted.

With any luck, Apple will address your complaint.

Getting Directions

  1. There are two main ways to get directions in Maps:
    • Tap a pin on the map, and then tap the car icon.
    • Tap Directions (or the arrow) in the upper left, tap the To field to open the Directions popover, and then enter your starting point and destination manually.
  2. Choose from driving or walking directions by tapping Drive or Walk at the top of the screen. Or, tap Apps to get mass transit directions in a third-party app.
  3. (Optional) Tap the list button to view the directions as a text-based list.
  4. Tap Start to receive turn-by-turn directions to your destination .
⑦ Turn-by-turn directions guide you to your destination.

⑦ Turn-by-turn directions guide you to your destination.

  5. When you reach your destination, tap End in the upper left if Maps doesn’t stop navigating automatically.

Note: Be sure to follow all applicable laws regarding device usage in vehicles, and keep your eyes on the road!
